Dear younger me,
Right now, you just finished school and you need a direction. You fill your life with friendships but have no greater goal. Your life is just beginning but you still don’t know what that means.
Dear me, I remember feeling unsure of what I wanted and lost and hopeless. I remember being frustrated by all the bullshit you have to go through to make a living in this world. And I remember being enslaved to those systems.
Right now, you are hardly making enough money to pay rent. Whatever’s left over is all spent on small excesses like a joint to calm your nerves at the end of the day. I remember how that felt.
I’m here to tell you what I wish I’d known back then. I wish I’d seen through all the lies and the barriers and the false promises. Our world is so full of bullshit and I was too young and uncertain to see past it.
Dear me, don’t worry, it gets better.
You’re uncertain of what you want
You spend so much time bouncing from one thing to the next. You are a master of none, a specialist at being special. Yet you still have not found your true calling.
Dear me, you are on the right track. In searching, you will find your way. It will take years before you see the path you’ll take. And you will get lost along the way.
However, it will all be worth it in the end.
I’m not here to tell you what you want or to reveal to you how it all ends. You’ll find out through the hard work and struggle that brings you here. Without that journey, you would never reach the end.
Life is about the journey. We make ourselves along the way.
You never imagine the possibilities
Dear me, you spend so much time working on skills and trying to improve, but you are afraid to consider the outcome. You watch yourself improving at your craft yet you’re scared to put your work out there and be judged.
Although you could, you don’t pursue the money that your work is worth. You tell yourself it’s because money is less important than experience, but that’s not why. It’s because you don’t want to fail.
You have trapped yourself inside such a small bubble of what is immediately possible for you. You don’t take the big risks and push against the boundaries.
But don’t worry, you will. Given time, you will come to see the flaw of this mindset and you will grow restless. In time you won’t be able to help but look outwards and upwards at what you might achieve.
It will be why you wake in the morning, and it will be what you think of before you fall asleep at night.
You always put others before yourself
Dear me, you are kind and compassionate. One of your greatest strengths is your ability to care for others and to put their needs above your own.
But you hide behind the faults of others and never achieve your full potential.
You’ll fall in love with women and give yourself to them, but you will lose yourself in the process. Your virtue is also your curse and it will hurt you badly before you learn.
When at last you learn to put your own future first, it will be the most painful lesson you’ve ever learned. But that’s how you’ll learn, you’ll go through hell.
You’ve always been stubborn and had to learn things your way. So have faith in yourself and trust your heart. You’ll make the right choices in the end.
You never set big goals to work towards
Dear me, you need a goal. You need something big to aspire to. You have always needed this since you were a little kid.
That’s why you’ve always been motivated, and tried harder than everyone else and wanted to be the best. Because you believe you can be.
But you will go through years when you forget this. You will drift along and let life bring you what it will. You will be lost.
I’m here to remind you to set goals. To dream big, and to pursue what makes you feel alive.
You may be lost now, and the road may seem long. But I’m here to tell you that that’s the point.
You’ll get lost before you find your way. You’ll be broken down many times before you make yourself into who you want to be. There are a million challenges awaiting you along the path to success. That’s how you’ll know you’re still on the right road.
Just keep moving. Trust me, it gets good soon.
