What do you suppose your time is worth?
And no, I’m not talking here about the pittance you get paid at your crappy job. I’m talking about the hours in your life.
How much is an hour of your time worth to you?
Let’s say you come up with a number like $50 an hour – that’s still pitiful, but it’s a start – we’ll work with it.
Now here’s a fun game:
Imagine that instead of just spending time doing the random stuff you do every day, you’re actually spending money. Think about that for a moment and then see how the following questions affect your mood.
Did you ever spend an hour watching TV? That cost you $50. Are you okay with that?
Ever spend 3 hours watching a football game? that’s $150, more like $200 if it’s the Superbowl. Does that sound like a good investment? Maybe, if it was a good game and your team won, eh?
How about 3 hours of reality TV and sitcoms? Same price tag – was it worth it?
How often do you scroll Facebook for 30 minutes without thinking about it? Just $25 a pop – line ‘em up!
Time is money
Yes, money has value, but it’s also in infinite supply. Hot news: Your time is not infinite. Life is short. You only have so much time. Tick tock, tick tock – there it goes… What’s it worth to you?
If you can’t see yourself as worth more than $7.25 an hour right now then you still have to ask yourself how much of that you’re prepared to spend on staring at a screen – once it’s gone, it’s gone, no refunds or chargebacks here.
If you came up with something like $100 an hour then I’m guessing you’re not the kind of person who spends four hours a night watching rubbish on TV. But if you do – wow, $400 is a hefty price to pay – best grab another beer to wash that one down.
The best investment
So, quick check-in. How are you feeling? Did you enjoy my little game, or not so much?
Well here’s a better one.
How much would you pay for some information that would teach how to start a business, how to become wealthy, how to live a rich and meaningful life full of fantastic relationships or how to get fit and feel awesome every day?
It’s amazing what you can learn if you’ll read a book or some blog posts, or take an online course for just 30 minutes a day, let alone 3 or 4 hours.
Could that sort of information be worth $25? Or $50? Even $200? Or more?
Would that be a good investment?
Was that a “Hell yeah!” I heard?
Of course! Time spent on your own personal development is the best investment you can ever make – it PAYS, in the long run, both money and time.
Party pooper time
So next time you find yourself sitting down in front of the box, cracking open a cold one, you’ll also find yourself asking “how much is this costing me?”. Then you can either get mad at me for putting that in your head, or you can choose to invest your valuable time in something which will actually serve you.
