Do you have a morning routine? Of course you do, we’re all creatures of habit. But if you didn’t create yours deliberately then it may not being doing you much good. Here’s how to get an awesome start to your day.
If your day starts by turning on your phone or the TV to find out what sort of day it’s going to be, and nothing moves until there’s coffee. Well you could do better for yourself. Here’s how to create a morning routine that actually gets you off to a good start to the day:
1 – Start Without Stimulants
If the first thing you do in the morning is get a coffee, and nothing happens until you’ve had that hit of caffeine, and maybe sugar, and nicotine, you need to consider doing something different. At least as an experiment.
Just for 30 days, drop the coffee and start your day with a glass of water. No coffee, or other stimulants, for at least the first hour, so you really notice the effect it has on you when you do drink it. A word of warning: when you discover how coffee actually makes you feel, you might decide that you don’t want it in your body at all, or at least a lot less of it!
2 – Move Your Body
Your body was designed to move. And especially if you’re going to sit in a car, sit behind a desk, sit in a car again and then sit on the couch, you really need to move at some point in the day!
Drop to the floor and do 10 pushups, do 20 air squats. Do Tai Chi or Yoga if that’s your thing. This doesn’t need to be a major workout, but ideally a short burst of moderate exercise, just enough to raise your heartrate and leave you slightly out of breath.
You drink coffee because you want to feel invigorated, but in reality it just drains your energy. Exercise will energize you in a much better way and is a great way to wake yourself up in the morning. Dump the artificial stimulants and get those endorphins flowing!
3 – Feed Your Mind
Do you let your social media feeds or the TV news set your mood for the day? Do you set your priorities according to what’s in your email inbox? Where are you in all of this? What have you decided to do with your day?
Take time first thing in the morning for your own personal growth. This might well be in the form of journaling or reading a good book, or both. Whatever you do, be sure to take at least 15 – 30 minutes to feed your mind with positivity before you go into the day.
If your household simply won’t give you the space to read or write in the morning then at least listen to podcasts or a personal development audiobook while you’re in the kitchen or on your commute, rather than putting on the radio.
Make it your own
There are many things you could put into a morning routine. The key is to find things that leave you feeling awesome, alive and eager to get into the day. You might consider going for a run, taking a cold shower, meditating, playing guitar or making a great green smoothie.
What makes you feel great? What makes you feel as though you’ve done something worthwhile? Fill your morning routine with these things – get up earlier to fit them in you have to! Then, whatever else happens in the day, you’ve had a good day already.
Write down your ideal morning routine. Tape it to the bathroom mirror or the coffee machine to make sure you remember. And then stick with it for 30 days to see how it feels – and I bet you feel awesome!
