What sort of life do you want? How do you want to spend your days? What sort of work do you want to do? And how does that work fit with the things you really want to do? Have you thought about that? You should!
When it comes to creating the life of your dreams, or any sort of life for that matter, there are two inescapable truths:
- Change is inevitable – how it affects you, however, is not
- Life is an adventure – whether you enjoy it or not is up to you
To live the good life, whatever that looks like for you, you need to embrace these two facts and learn how to deal with them.
Change is inevitable
Everything changes, all the time – get used to it!
- Economies change
- Markets change
- Jobs change
- People change
- Security changes
- Relationships change
- Health and fitness change
Some of these things change so slowly you don’t notice then creeping up on you.
Some change so fast they blindside you.
But they all change. All the time.
Life is an adventure
Does it feel like one? If not you might want to do something about that before someone else does!
Think of life as a trip to an amusement park.
There’s all these different rides to go on and activities to do. Some people are having an awesome time. How about you? What rides are you taking?
Maybe you start on the carousel. Round and round. And round and round and round.
It’s great fun going round in circles when you’re six years old, but there’s more to life than that. If you want it.
What about the roller-coaster, or the waltzers, or the log flume? Sure you might be a bit scared, but you’ll also have an amazing, exhilarating time and have some great stories to tell.
Of course some people don’t get on the rides at all. Don’t be one of those people!
Sooner or later someone will come along and push you in the swimming pool or steal your candyfloss. Now you’re having an adventure, but maybe not one you’re going to enjoy.
Is this the real life?
Okay, so life isn’t actually an amusement park. But it works much the same way.
Do you see people having an amazing life, doing things you’d love to do?
And do you see people going round in circles, getting nowhere, going to the same boring job, never having any money, always complaining about how bad life is?
What sort of life do you want?
And what are you doing to make that life a reality?
Will you do what your parents did, or what they think you should do, or what your careers advisor suggests?
Pick any of those and you risk spending your life going round in circles on a wooden horse. Day after day. Year after boring year, until it’s time for the ride to stop.
Some people will have stories to tell of all the awesome things they did. How about you?
Take command of your life
You’ll notice I say command and not control – that’s deliberate; you can’t control everything in life.
Some things, like the economy, or the weather, you’ll have no control over. You only get to choose how to respond to them.
Things like relationships and health you can influence by your decisions, actions and behavior.
Other things, like the skills you have, your personal development, your level of fitness and your personal finances, you have complete control over.
It’s the interplay of these three that makes up the adventure, and determines whether it’s one you enjoy.
What will you choose?
Choose not to learn much, get any job you can, lose that job, get into debt, get divorced, get depressed.
Learn some new skills, start an online business, learn how to make lots of money, spend your time doing things you love to do.
These aren’t the only choices, of course. The point is that, when you embrace change and adventure, take command and make decisions that work for you, you actually have choices.
So what do you want in life? What are your goals?
If you don’t have goals you’ll end up working for someone who does!
Take the time to plan your life. The adventure is there waiting for you. So what’s it to be?
Round and round in miserable mediocrity?
Or an amazing adventure?
If I sound a little biased it’s because I’ve tried both. You don’t have to!
Mediocrity really isn’t much fun, but if you follow the standard nonsense of “go to school, get good grades, go to college, get on the career ladder, yadda yadda yadda…” that’s where you’ll end up.
Learn some useful skills, learn how to make money, start an online business, or two, and you’re on the road to success. Success being, having the time and money to do whatever you want, whenever you want to do it.
Remember: what you do with your time is always within your control, unless you sell yourself to a job – even then your ‘free’ time is yours to spend how you will.
So what will you do with it?
Don’t wait for the world
If you don’t deliberately choose your adventures then, sooner or later, things will happen to make your life “interesting” – usually in ways that you don’t enjoy. Don’t wait for that – pick your adventures in advance.
If you wait for the day when everything turns out right for you, you’ll wait a long time, and usually end up disappointed. You have to work at it.
Work on your personal development. Work on your relationships. Work to improve your skills.
I’m not saying it’s all work and no play – there’s no fun in that! But life is a lot more fun when you’ve done the work and are prepared for the changes that inevitably come your way.
So do the work, and have a good adventure!
